Nimona

I was incredibly honored to be part of this amazing Oscar-nominated film from January 2021 for about 10 months with DNEG. During this period, we designed and animated more than 100 holograms to populate the entire kingdom. We also designed some MGFX assets for the control room and the game in the city. Finally, we created the end credits, which was one of my dream jobs.

Holograms

The city in Nimona is unique; it's a blend of medieval and futuristic elements. The cityscape features buildings inspired by medieval architecture alongside modern skyscrapers, with cars flying between them. Animated hologram posters representing shops, events, and the kingdom's propaganda are scattered throughout the city. Unfortunately, I can't share my sketches of these as they belong to DNEG, but you can see our holograms all over the city in the movie. Nimona boasts a very strong visual language throughout the entire film, and designing all the posters and visuals in the city was no exception.

Control room

When Nimona and Ballister are trying to find out who actually killed the Queen, the Kingdom is watching every corner, attempting to locate them. Working on this control room shot was very enjoyable; I designed all of the HUD elements and animated/populated the screens with my team.

Game

Also, this little scene was really fun to work on. Designing little 8-bit monsters and animating them was a joy. .

End Credit

Finally, we made the end credits! I designed these end credits with the amazing Tania Nunes and Patrick Phoenix. Nimona was originally developed by Blue Sky Studios until Disney bought the studio and shut it down. Some years later, Annapurna and DNEG picked up this project, and Nimona rose from the ashes. During this production, everyone was so passionate about creating this film. Therefore, the end credits were crucial for us to acknowledge all of the people who worked on this film.

Finally

I want to say a HUGE thank you to my incredible team, our supervisor Johan Dekker, and producer Alex Dawson who led this team throughout the entire year. They worked tirelessly every day and always maintained a positive and caring attitude. All of the motion designers - Tania, Patrick Phoenix, Daniel, Pablo, Patrick Tandy, Paul, Andy, and Grant - are SUPER talented and incredibly friendly people. We worked together remotely for 10 months, and I enjoyed every single moment.

Director Nick and Troy, along with our Art Director Aidan, are SUPER talented and equally wonderful people, always providing us with super positive feedback.

I am incredibly honored to have worked on this beautiful film for 10 months. Thank you all so much!
