Making of opening
Story
When I moved from Japan to the UK, I didn’t miss it for a long time. I felt quite distanced from it—especially after my experience in the commercial industry in Tokyo, where long hours often meant staying overnight at the office.
In 2025, I returned to Ginza, the area where I used to work. At the time, it hadn’t been a place I felt connected to, but this visit was different. I experienced a strong sense of nostalgia. The narrow buildings, independent shops, izakayas, bars, vending machines, and dense layering of signage felt distinct and deeply atmospheric—very different from the cityscape in London.
Now, places in Japan carry a sense of nostalgia for me. That feeling became the starting point for creating the opening of my showreel, inspired by the streets of Ginza.
The original storyboard was a bit different from the final. It was more about the camera motion and the fire effect which I decided to change once I came up the idea of kaiju sneezing accidentally.
Fake Fisheye effect
I wanted to create a super dynamic, fun, heavy fisheye lens effect—how did I do that? Instead of using an actual fisheye lens, which would heavily distort the kaiju and the title, I modelled the buildings in a distorted way. This way, I didn’t need to worry about distorting the characters or the readability of the titles. It was a new challenge, and I’m happy with the result.
